2012 Spring Intersectional Regatta

Jacksonville University graciously hosted the SAISA 2012 Spring Intersectional Regatta on Saturday, March 17, 2012. Racing was held on the St. Johns River, just off the shoreline of a very beautiful campus recreational park. Spectators had great views of the races from a very comfortable pavilion, and the park kept the kids busy during race postponements. Four schools competed in one division. It was a beautiful warm day, but unfortunately without much wind. A teaser of a southwest wind stirred up in the late morning and a race was attempted, but the wind didn’t last and the boats could not overcome the strong outgoing current. Racing was again postponed until a 5-10 knot southeast sea breeze kicked in, just as the locals predicted, at 3:20 PM. It was however accompanied by thunderstorms on the other side of the river, which looked very threatening, but fortunately stayed on the other side. Eight races were hastily completed, and of course the skies cleared as soon as we finished. The St Croix team took top honors with five bullets. The top Inland/Coastal team was Beaufort Academy, and they have secured a berth in the 2012 ISSA Great Oaks Regatta to be held at SYC in New Orleans in November.
